Caller Hub

Welcome to the Caller Hub for Step-Up Connections. This section is designed to support callers with the information and resources needed to confidently engage with participants. Step-Up Connections focuses on reducing loneliness and improving mental well-being among older adults through regular, friendly phone conversations. As a caller, your role is to build meaningful connections, provide support, and help identify any needs that may require additional resources or referrals. Use this hub to find guidance, tools, and answers to common questions so you can make each conversation positive, respectful, and impactful.

Feel Stuck in a Conversation?

It’s completely normal to have moments where a conversation slows down or you’re unsure what to say next. The most important thing is to stay present, patient, and supportive. Even short pauses can be meaningful, and your willingness to listen makes a difference. If you find yourself needing a little help to keep the conversation going, try some of the strategies below.

  • Ask open-ended questions (e.g., “How has your week been?”)

  • Bring up everyday topics like hobbies, meals, or weather

  • Reflect on something they shared earlier in the call

  • Share a small, appropriate detail about your own day

  • Use gentle prompts like “Tell me more about that”

  • Embrace brief pauses—they’re okay and natural

Check out the questions below for inspiration:

What is something you treasure in your home?

What kind of food makes you happy?

What is a place with special meaning for you?

Who is someone you’re grateful for? Why?

What is courage to you?

Need more ideas?

We’ve created a thoughtfully designed Conversation Starter Packet filled with engaging questions to help reconnect, deepen relationships, and inspire great dialogue.
